Community

Wellesbourne Sword Club is a member led, non profit-making fencing club that meets every Thursday evening from 8:15pm to 9:45pm at Hazlemere Community Centre near High Wycombe. We cater for all ages and abilities from 13 upwards and use all three weapons, although predominantly foil and épée. Visitors are welcome and we regularly run courses for beginners.

Support

At Wellesbourne Sword Club, we are passionate about the sport and dedicated to supporting each other in developing technical skills and personal growth. We work together to help every fencer, from beginners to experienced competitors, improve and achieve their goals. Whether it's refining footwork, mastering blade techniques, or building confidence on the piste, we create a welcoming and encouraging environment where everyone can thrive and share in the joy of fencing.

Beginners

Roughly twice a year, we run a six-week beginners' course designed for those who are curious about fencing and want to give the sport a try. These courses provide a structured introduction to the basics of fencing, including footwork, blade control, and fundamental techniques in a friendly and supportive environment. Led by experienced fencers, the sessions are tailored to help newcomers build confidence and develop a solid foundation in the sport. Whether you're looking to try something new, stay active, or discover a passion for fencing, our beginners' course is the perfect place to start.

When

There is a limited selection of club kit, masks and weapons, but we would recommend regular members to invest in their own.

Beginners

Our six-week beginners' course is the perfect introduction to the exciting world of fencing for anyone aged 13 and over. Led by experienced fencers, the course focuses on the fundamentals of foil, with four sessions dedicated to building your skills in footwork, blade techniques, and tactics. You'll also enjoy taster sessions in epee and sabre, giving you a chance to experience all three weapons and their unique styles. Alongside practical skills, we introduce the rules of the sport, ensuring you’re ready to participate confidently and safely.

There’s no need to purchase any equipment—our club provides everything you need, including masks, jackets, gloves, and weapons. By the end of the course, you’ll have the skills to fence safely on an electric wireless piste and a strong foundation to continue your fencing journey. Course fees will be confirmed closer to the start date, so check our news page for updates on upcoming sessions. This is a fantastic way to explore fencing in a supportive and engaging environment.

Our lead coach holds an up-to-date DBS certification for working with young people, as well as first aid and safeguarding qualifications, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for all participants. Beginners should bring sensible clothes for an indoor sporting activity, trainers & knee length socks.
